An NKVD foreign intelligence cover name which appears in five cables (from August 21 to September 6, 1944) partially decrypted in the course of the Venona operation; its bearer was identified by Venona translators as “Joseph Katz.” According to Venona decryptions, Katz’s cover name was changed to “Stukach” (“Whistler”) on September 2, 1944.
